Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The ex-president was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in prison, but he was staying under confinement pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a precautionary step after recent developments were revealed.

This involved seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the former leader's plan to remove the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the possibility of Bolsonaro's transfer to foreign missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of planning to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The legal document emphasizes that the US embassy in the federal district, the capital city, is situated around 13km from the former president's residence.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist American leader Trump, causing him to implement a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.

The former president is being detained in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will experience a detention review on Sunday.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that Bolsonaro be allowed to leave his home for medical care, saying he demanded regular treatment for lung conditions and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plot which encompassed plans to assassinate the current president and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was prevented because it failed to get the support of the armed forces officials. The current president was inaugurated without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, many his backers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The police stepped in and around 1,500 people were detained.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been encouraged by him whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the time, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from running for public office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
