European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
