Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the right to contest specific calls from the chair umpire, following the system currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step follows just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to review other decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can request.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
